guyphone - music & sports (a very very guyphone christmas)

an updated/expanded version of a noteworthy experimental release from 2023, originally distributed through a small run of diy cds.

Following quickly behind Minneapolis' very own The Busy Signals is Guyphone (with variations of lé guyphone, guyphone, Guyphoné and Guyphone(e)), a self-proclaimed "avant-trashcore" noise band originally hailing from South Minneapolis (now partially transplanted to Vermont). Birthed sometime in December of '22 by Katherine Andrews and Mustapha Jallow while both working at an art museum, Guyphone began as a daydream; a break room conversation on the shared musical inspirations of groups like Blind Willie Johnson, Neil Young, Low, Kali Malone and similar projects in Minneapolis that involved sound and visual noise art.

To craft the songs that make up “Music & Sports (A Very Very Guyphone Christmas)”, coke cans were fashioned as percussive instruments, guitars were de-tuned (mostly half step down, or a whole step down), babies cried, and other found sounds were drenched in hallway echo and reverb. It attempts to put into sound the “discordant,” "laxed," "slacky," and lazy, sonic blue experience that quickly moves towards a surreal and panicked edge. They’ve kept the same abstract (yet playful) melancholic ideas in mind as the first installment of Music & Sports- complete with its fair share of heady low ends and chord progressions that unfold like lullabies. Guyphone, as confident and patient as they sound here, are only mere minutes away from a caffeine-induced meltdown… but, hey, Praise God They're Satisfied.
