orange cake mix - a shadow of eclipse and other phases of the moon

orange cake mix, aka jim rao, was an indie/diy mainstay throughout the 90's and early 2000's. with albums on cult-favorite labels like darla records, blackbean and placenta tape club, and countless tracks on underground pop compilations, you were/are bound to stumble across some of his material when diving through the treasure troves of indie music from the era. "a shadow of eclipse...", first released in 2001, is a stand-out piece from within his discography that i am happy to bring to cassette for the first time.

i first found this release through a close friend who let me borrow a cd with the album burned onto it many years ago, so i really can't deny that there are some sentimental connections above everything else... the spaced-out keyboards and meandering guitars are a bit of a step away from the soft acoustic tunes found on albums like "more mellow hits" and "grapefruit", but committing the sound to go with the themes of space travel and the sky above work really well and create a very mellowed-out and introspective listen. best listened to on a nice sunny day, watching the clouds go by.
